Miss Peregrine’s Home For Peculiar Children by Ransom Riggs

It stared back with eyes that swam in dark liquid, furrowed trenches of carbon-black flesh loose on its hunched frame, its mouth hinged open grotesquely so that a mass of long eel-like tongues could wriggle out.

Rating: 4 out of 5

What it’s about:

A mysterious island. An abandoned orphanage. A strange collection of curious photographs.

A horrific family tragedy sets sixteen-year-old Jacob journeying to a remote island off the coast of Wales, where he discovers the crumbling ruins of Miss Peregrine’s Home for Peculiar Children. As Jacob explores its abandoned bedrooms and hallways, it becomes clear that the children were more than just peculiar. They may have been dangerous. They may have been quarantined on a deserted island for good reason. And somehow—impossible though it seems—they may still be alive.

Ok. Confession: I’ve been holding on to this book since it was first released, but didn’t get around to reading it till last September.

I wish I had read it sooner and have yet to get my hands on the other 2, Hollow City & Library of Souls.  Having said that, I really enjoyed this book..No.  Actually, I loved this book!  In fact, I’m totally stoked it’s being turned into motion picture which comes out in theatres on September 30, 2016.  I’m a fan of Tim Burton’s movies and can’t wait to see the movie adaptation.

My favourite part of this tale, were the photographs.  They remind you of circus freaks from back in the late 1920’s.  I thought it was a clever  move for the author (Ransom Riggs), to use these photos to create the story.  At first, I was expecting it to be a hair-raising novel about ghosts and demons.  So I was a little disappointed that it wasn’t, which is why I didn’t give it a full 5 star rating.  Still, it was a good read. One worth recommending.

HTGAWM: We’re Good People Now

OMG! Who watched Thurday’s season premier?

• The show kicks off with an unknown body being wheeled into the back of an Ambulance.  Except, it’s not until the end of the episode that we come back to this scene.

• It’s the start of a new year where the students take part in Annalise’s pro bono clinic, and get a taste of what it’s like to be her.  Their first case is an immigrant from Iraq who pleaded guilty to possession of marijuana, and now faces deportation.

•Someone has been plastering Annalise’s picture all over campus with the word Killer in red letters, but we don’t know who yet.

• Mahoney is dead, which we assume was Frank’s doing and now he’s on the run.

• Annalise has a burner phone and has been secretly talking to someone, who is later revealed as a hit man ordered to find Frank.  However, the ever so sly Frank gets to him first before Annalise can decide what to do: Get him or leave him.

• Oliver and Connor break up

•Finally, we’re back to the body bag scene where Annalise’s house is on fire.  She demands to see who the body is and starts screaming.

What the fuck? Who’s dead?

Bravo Peter Nowalk..Shit just got real!

Quantico: New Season, new story

The Season 2 premier is tonight, with a set of new faces and is said to be like ‘a set of different books in a series.’

I really enjoyed Season 1 and LOVED its unpredictability.  It was a total shocker to find out that Liam was the bad guy all along.

Season 1 ended with Alex being offered a job in the CIA, which is where this season will take place.  Now that Alex is no longer on the run, it will be interesting to see how Season 2 plays out.

Last year was fast-paced, and had lots of twists and turns.  Will it be the same this year?  Guess we’ll have to catch the first episode to find out!

The Stinky Cheese Man

Run run run as fast as you can. You can’t catch me.  I’m the Stinky Cheese Man!

I love that I have an excuse to be a kid again.  It’s like I’m re-living a better version of my childhood through my kids.

Now I’m an 80’s child, so I grew up with classics like Green Eggs & Ham, The Paperbag Princess and Miss Nelson is Missing.  I had never read or even heard of this book, The Stinky Cheese Man and Other Fairly Stupid Tales until now.

It’s a funny and silly take on traditional stories of The Gingerbread Man, Little Red Riding Hood and The Ugly Duckling just to name a few.  If you ask me, the stories in this book are genius and I highly recommend it for those who know these fairy tales.

American Gothic: Coming back for Season 2?

*Spoiler Alert*

The Season 1 finale ended with quite the shock! SBK’s identity was finally revealed.  After episode 9, I had my suspicions as to whether SBK was Sophie.  Turns out I was right. Except there was a twist.  Alison Hawthorne was the one who wanted Madeleine killed.  I didn’t see that one coming! While sitting on the couch in Cam’s apartment,  she sees a picture on the wall and solves the mystery as to who the Silver Bells Killer is..Sophie.  After discovering that Sophie is SBK, she orders her to kill her mother.

I loved this show and hope to see a Season 2 renewal.  How about you? Are you a fan? Or a critic?
